SUMMER DISPLAY
BEDDING OPERATIONS. i MUNICIPAL GARDENS. A report of the bedding operations for the period ended December 7 was submitted to the City Council on Tuesday evening by the Superintendent of Reserves (Mr B. Mansfield), who stated:— “Throughout this period special effort has been concentrated on the distribution of bedding plants, raised and grown at the municipal nurseries, to their permanent flowering quarters. All beds have been more closely planted this season and it is anticipated a good, bright and lasting display will result. “In the past three weeks 61,361 an-' nuals have been used. There are a further 19,350 plants to be distributed, but all bedding operations should be concluded by the end of next week, which is well in advance of last year, but this is largely due to the satisfactory conditions which have prevailed throughout the planting season, resulting in such large numbers of plants being handled without any apparent loss. “Special attention is directed to Block 1 where, in addition" to extensive plantings of ornamental trees, shrubs and roses, the remodelling of these gardens has necessitated the use of 13,800 bedding plants to date this season, a figure which exceeds by many thousands the total number of annuals previously used in any one garden. A total of 7550 plants has been used at the Eastern Cemetery to date this season. All beds, borders and sections, which are cared for by the department have received attention.
