WELL-EARNED REST
CZECHOSLOVAKIAN PRESIDENT. BRITISH PRESS TRIBUTES. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, December 16. The newspapers pay tributes to President Masaryk of Czechoslovakia on his retirement. There are many references to his sojourn in England and the great number of friends he made. ■ The Daily Telegraph says that if any European statesman of the first rank has earned his repose, it is Dr. Masaryk; if any has deserved supremely well of his country and should be styled its father, it is Dr. Masaryk. Under this philosopher Czechoslovakia has made great economic and social progress and has sought peace and ensured it. The Times says that by precept and example Dr. Masaryk has victoriously defended liberal causes temporarily lost or continually endangered in Central Europe since the war. For 18 years he has been both the first citizen, of a free country and the chief guide and counsellor of its political progress and, thanks above all to him, the democratic institutions of Czechoslovakia have stood firm.
