COMMERCIAL

REMARKABLE SALE. LORNEVILLE’S BIGGEST YARDING IN 15 YEARS. SHEEP AND CATTLE VALUES WELT. MAINTAINED. The biggest yarding of fat cattle at Lorneville for 15 years was experienced yesterday, when the last stock sale of the year was attended by a big ring of buyers. The fat cattle yarding has been exceeded only once in the last 19 years, and its dimensions gave the storeman a difficult job to accommodate all of the entries. The entries in other sections also were very heavy, but there was no lack of competition and prices were quite satisfactory. In fact, in view of the size of the yarding, the fat cattle sale was a wonderfully good one, there still being plenty of competition when the last pens were disposed of, just before 8.30 last evening. Both the fat sheep and the fat cattle sales maintained their values in a remarkable manner. , The yardings yesterday' and tnose ot ;he previous sale were as follows: —

Yesterday’s yarding included 962 fat iambs, 25 dairy cows, 23 bulls, and 10 vealers. Store Sheep. The yarding was of average quality with no outstanding lines. The class of ewes and lambs entered was poor, and they were not in great demand. A line of shorn two-tooth wethers brought 18/4 and 18/3, but the best of the ewes did not bring much over 11/- all counted. Dalgety and Co. sold:—On account ot J Cameron (Mokotua), 87 ewes and lambs at 11/5; M. D. McNally (Morton Mains), 60 two-tooth wethers at 18/3, 10 at 18/4. Wright, Stephenson and Co., sold:— On account of Nicholas Moloney (Makarewa), a pen of ewes and lambs at 11/3 all counted; client (Lorneville), a pen of lambs at 11/-. Fat Sheep. The exceptionally big yarding of fat sheep included a big proportion of ewes. There was not the representation of good heavy wethers that was ;arded at the previous sale, but the quality generally was quite good. Wethers sold firmly throughout the sale, but the market for ewes was not so steady, prices fluctuating about 2/to 3/-, and showing a drop all over to that extent. The sale firmed toward the end, and, considering the big yarding, was a satisfactory one. Prime heavy shorn wethers brought up to 28/3, good quality 24/6 to 25/6, lighter weights 22/- to 23/-, unfinished down to 19/-. Prime heavy woolly ewes made up to 25/-, good quality 22/- to 23/6, medium 18/6 to 20/-, lighter 16/6 to 17/6, and aged and unfinished down to 13/-. Prime heavy shorn young ewes realized up to 21/6, good quality 18/- to 19/6, medium 16/- to 17/-, unfinished down to 12/6. The opening of the season was greeted by a full yarding of fat lambs, which included some very good quality lambs. Freezing buyers were operating up to schedule rates, and butchers were preparing for their Christmas requirements, the consequence being a good sale. Prime heavy butchers’ lambs made from 25/- up, best quality freezing lambs 23/- to 23/9, good quality 22/- to 22/6, fair quality 20/6 to 21/6, light and unfinished down to 19/-. There was a big ring of buyers, and there was not the slightest waning of interest. The yarding was of fair quality cattle, cows and heifers predominating and there being only a sprinkling of decent bullocks.
