MURDER IN TRAIN

CONCILIATION COMMISSIONER’S DEATH. YOUTH FOUND GUILTY. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 9.5 p.m.) Sydney, December 16. In the Criminal Court John Hickey, aged 17, a dairy hand, was found guilty of murdering Montague Henwood and sentenced to death. His defence was that Henwood endeavoured to assault him and during a struggle in a railway carriage Hickey killed Henwood with a water-bottle, rifled his pockets and threw the body out of the train. The judge said it was quite apparent that the jury rejected the vile excuse Hickey made for his terrible act.

The body of Montague Henwood, State Conciliation Commissioner, aged 65, was found alongside the railway line near Faulson bridge, 51 miles west of Sydney. One side of Henwood’s head was shockingly injured. His vest pockets were turned inside out. A gold watch and chain were untouched, but his hat and baggage were missing.
