Arsenal’s defeat of Aston Villa was one of the greatest sensations in the history of soccer. Aston Villa, at the bottom of the league table, are making an effort to avoid relegation to the second division. They have spent within a month £24,000 in acquiring new stars who failed against Arsenal’s cleverness. Arsenal’s centre forward, Drake, scored all the goals, a feat unequalled in English league in 47 years. The players of both teams were valued at £llO,OOO in transfer fees.
WRESTLING McCready outpoints wade. (Per United Press Association.) Greymouth, December 15. The third encounter between Glen Wade and Earl McCready in the South Island this season ended in neither wrestler obtaining a fall. The Town Hall was well filled last night. The honours, although they went to McCready, favoured, if either of the pair, Wade, who in a scientific, and at times hard, gruelling tussle, forced the issue, applying holds which were most effective; and on three occasions only the gong saved McCready. A draw would have been a fairer indication of the contest, the crowd to a small degree showing its disapproval of the referee, Mr A. Beban’s decision in favour of McCready. The bout was totally free of showmanship and was voted the best yet, a high standard being maintained throughout, with a variety of applications which were cleverly broken by both matmen. PENCHEFF BEATS NILAN. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.5 p.m.) Sydney, December 16. In a wrestling contest at the Leichhardt Stadium, George Pencheff defeated Tommy Nilan by two falls to one.
YACHTING VAL’S SUCCESS. SANDERS CUP TRIALS. (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, December 14. The Sanders Cup trials to-day were won by Vai with Betty second and Eileen third. Vai has now won five of the trials and has been second once, so that her selection with Ivan McGrath as skipper seems to be assured. SANDERS CUP TRIALS. HUIA WINS CANTERBURY SERIES. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, December 14. Huia won the third Sanders Cup trial, sailed at Lyttelton on _ Saturday afternoon. The wind wag light and flukey at the start, but a boisterous sou’wester was blowing before the end. Huia, with Eliot Sinclair as skipper, has now won all three trials and will probably defend the Sanders Cup for Canterbury at Auckland next month.
