MATCH AT NIGHTCAPS. An unofficial Town team travelled to Nightcaps on Saturday and played a friendly match with the Nightcaps Club’s senior team, an interesting game ending in a victory for the home team by 9 sets to 7. A heavy shower during the early part of the afternoon necessitated the shortening of the men’s sets to thirteen and the women’s sets to eleven games. Mrs Cappie, the Nightcaps top player, avenged her defeat by Miss J. Kelly at Riverton on November 30 and Miss Marie Kelly defeated the Town second player, Miss L. Mehaffey. Playing top for Town, L. Gray gave a fine display against Burgess whom he beat 7 —4 but C. Breen went down to Grant. The visiting team was mpst hospitably entertained. WAIHOPAI CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS. The Waihopai Club availed itself of an “off” afternoon on Saturday by bringing to finality the majority of its handicap and championship events. _ V/. Strang won the men’s singles title by defeating G. R. Hanan B—6, 6—2 in an attractive final. In the women’s singles championship final Mrs Hanan meets the winner of the semi-finalists in the other half, Mrs Salisbury and Mrs Clarkson. McGRATII AT DUNEDIN. INVITATION TO R. McCALLUM. The Otago Lawn Tennis Association has invited Russell McCallum, of the Southend Club, to play in the exhibition matches at Dunedin on Boxing Day when V. McGrath and E. F. Moon will be the attraction. McCallum has accepted the invitation. The young Southlander well deserves the honour and will have the good wishes of all players in the province. In last year’s Christmas tournament he was runner-up in both the singles and doubles championship. In the singles he took G. A. Pearce to the fifth set. He has had a good record in representative matches and is playing particularly well at present.
