BLUFF NOTES

RELIEF COMMITTEE. (From Our Correspondent.) A meeting of the Bluff Relief Committee was held in the Council Chambers on Monday evening when the Mayor (the Rev. A. E. Waite) presided over the following: Messrs A. H. Ferguson, D. E. S. Mason, R. N. Porter, F. J. Shearer and the Rev. T. A. Speer. The question of Christmas relief was carefully considered and it was decided to postpone action until the intention of the Government with reference to Christmas relief was made known. Authority was given to the Mayor and Town Clerk to expend a proportion of the funds in hand should occasion appear to warrant this action, the balance of the funds to be retained for prospective expenditure during the winter. ( It was reported that there was a slightly larger number of men unemployed this year as compared with 1934 but the commencement of seasonal trades in the near future will considerably relieve the situation. It was also mentioned that after the New Year increased activity on the waterfront might be expected. Lawn Tennis. The Woodend and Ocean Beach Tennis Clubs met in a friendly match last Saturday on the latter's court. After an enjoyable afternoon’s play the Beach team proved victorious by 12 sets (88 games) to 4 sets (54 games).
