NIGHTCAPS NOTES

The school grounds which 0 are looking particularly attractive at the present time are admirably adapted for such functions and there was a large attendance of parents and children. The secretary of the Nightcaps Branch, Mrs M. Crippled Children's Fund. A meeting was held during the week to discuss an appeal for funds for crippled children. The meeting was convened by the Nightcaps School Committee and the following were present.—Messrs J. Grant, A. Tinker and J. D. Sinclair (school committee), Mr O. V. Berry (headmaster), Mesdames A. Y. Cook, F. Wells, J. Dempster, J. Dockerty and J. B. McLeod (Women’s Institute). Mr Berry was voted to the chair and explained tire objects of the appeal. Following an open discussion, it was finally decided to leave the matter of donations to each individual institution for consideration. The Nightcaps Branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union have donated £1 1/- to the funds of the campaign. District High School. Gratification is being expressed in this district that official notification has been received of the resolution to establish a Form 111 in Nightcaps at the beginning of the new school year. The Educational Department have completed arrangements with the trustees of the Nightcaps Methodist Church and the local church building is to be used for the purpose of housing the Form 111 pupils. From authoritative sources it is anticipated that the support, the new department will receive will be such that a fully staffed District High School will be required after the inaugural year has been completed. Obituary 7. Widespread regret was expressed when it became known that Mr Cornelius Flynn had passed away in Invercargill. The late Mr Flynn was widely known and respected in the Nightcaps and Wreys Bush districts where he had resided practically throughout his life. Familiarly known as “Con,” the late Mr Flynn had followed farming and flaxmilling pursuits and was widely known in these circles. He was the second son of the late Mr James Flynn who for 35 years conducted the well known All Nations hostelry at Wreys Bush. The late Mr Flynn went to the world war in the 20tli infantry reinforcements and was badly wounded at Baupaume. After spending a considerable time in English hospitals he was invalided home during 1918. Of late years the war wounds were slowly but surely telling on the late Mr Flynn’s health. Some four months ago he underwent an operation but this did not prove wholly successful and two other operations were deemed necessary. The late soldier and gentlemen’s general health was not sufficiently strong to withstand these inroads and Mr Flynn died on Saturday last. Of a retiring nature the late Mr Flynn was an enthusiastic follower of horseracing and was familiarly known on most of the South Island racecourses. The cortege on Monday was a very large one friends from every part of the Western District gathering to -my their last respects. The services at the Nightcaps Catholic Church and the graveside at Wreys Bush were conducted by the Rev. Father Fenton.
