COUNTY COUNCIL

THE SOUTHLAND BODY MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Southland County Council was held yesterday. There were present: Messrs T. Golden (chairman), J. Dennis, G. W. Whittingham, G. A. Wraytt, L. A. Niederer, F. F. Trapski, W. M. Norman, J. McNeill and A. S. McNaught. Thirty-one ratepayers of the Woodlands and Rimu districts forwarded a petition asking for the reforming and metalling of the road near the Rimu factory, known as Stewart’s road, the use of which would save three-quarters of a mile between Rimu to Woodlands and eliminate a sharp and dangerous corner.

It was decided to refer the petitioner to the member for the riding and the acting county engineer. Nineteen ratepayers of the Winton Riding asked the council to consider the extension of Gill road to meet the present road along the south boundary of section 309, a distance of about one and a-quarter miles. The road if completed would be of very great assistance to all settlers both east and west of Forest Hill. It was decided to refer the petition to the member for the riding and the acting county engineer. Work of Bridge Gangs. Reporting on bridge constructional work for October the acting county engineer (Mr G. R. Milward) stated: — No. 1 Gang—The construction of reinforced concrete bridges on Meller road was continued throughout the month and on the 31st only about two days’ work remained to be done. No. 2 Gang.—The work of repairing the west approach to the Iron Bridge was completed on the 2nd. On the 3rd and the 4th the gang was employed, in the yard cleaning engine and shifting gear etc. On the afternoon of the 4th the plant commenced the journey to Otamita, arriving there on the 7th and work was commenced on the reconstruction of the Otamita bridge. Tnis work was completed on the 18th ana a shift was made to Waikaia, work being commenced on the Stoney Creek bridge on the 21st. The Stoney Creek bridge construction was still in hand on the 31st. Traffic .jispector’s Report. The counties’ traffic inspector (Mr P. C. Watson) in his monthly report stated that a total of 2360 miles had . been patrolled, of which 640 were in the Wallace County. Five drivers were tested for licenses, all passing the prescribed test. A large number ot transport complaints were attended to and 37 temporary goods service licenses were issued in the No. 10 District. During the month 10 heavy traffic licenses were issued in the Wallace County and 36 in the Southland County. Tenders Accepted. Wyndham-Mataura Highways (Marairua Deviation): Construction of New Road —R. Milne, £225 4/-.
