Invercargill Operatic Society
DANCE IN CLUB ROOMS. On Wednesday evening the Social Committee of the Invercargill Operatic Society arranged a dance in the society’s rooms in Esk street. Features of the evening were a sketch, given by Messrs E. Sopp and J. Matheson and two burlesques. The first was of the cabin scene in “The New Moon,” and was performed by Mrs H. Rout, Misses R. E. Helm, M. Kilkelly, M. O’Neill and M. Cavanagh. The second was of the filming of a love scene in the Southland talkie shortly to be released, and the performers were Messrs B. D. Murgatroyd, L. B. Smith, C. L. Stubbs, G. E. Williams, J. Matheson and C. Paine. Music for dancing was played by Mr Gordon Lindsay and Mr J. Tomlinson. Among those present were Mr and Mrs H. Rout, Mr and Mrs G. M. Corbet, Mr and Mrs P. P. Wimsett, Mr and Mrs I. V. Wilson, Mr and Mrs C. Paine, Mr and Mrs J. Colbran; Mesdames N. R. Henderson, F. C. Rowley and Thomson. Misses R. E. Helm, O. Holloway, C. Smith, M. Vice-regal. On Tuesday afternoon at 5.30 the Southland Women’s Club will entertain her Excellency Viscountess Galway, who with the Governor-General, Viscount Galway, arrives at Bluff by the Matai on Tuesday. '
The Hon. Thomas O’Byme, M.L.C.. and Mrs O’Byrne, Dalrymple road, left yesterday on a visit to Christchurch. Mrs R. E. Free, of Christchurch, accompanied by her children, is the guest of her mother, Mrs W. A. Ott, Gala street.
Miss Simmonds, Chelmsford street, left by the express on Thursday morning on an extended visit to Christchurch.
Mrs J. H. Waymouth, Lewis street, was hostess at bridge on Tuesday evening in honour of Mrs C. E. Wright, of Roxburgh.
After being the guest of Mrs W. E. Hunt, “Waitoru,” Wallacetown, Miss Loo Cartwright, of Timaru, is now the guest of Mrs F. G. Hall-Jones, “Lennel,” Gladstone. Mrs J. E. Macassey, “The Hermitage,” St. Clair, Dunedin, left yesterday to spend a few weeks with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr and Mrs Pat Macassey, “Carrickfergus,” Dacre.
