TENNIS MATCH (From Our Correspondent.) The Riverton and Tuatapere A grade teams met on the local courts in a competition match, which resulted in a win for the former by 14 sets to 2. The game proved a most enjoyable one. Following were the results, Riverton names being mentioned first:— Men’s Singles—J. Banks 9 v. Higgins 3; Father Henley 9 v. Charlton 3; McPhail 9 v. Higgins 5. Riverton: 14 sets, 120 games; Tuatapere: 2 sets, 76 games. Boys’ Brigade Demonstrations. The local Boys’ Brigade Company and the Life Boys gave their annual demonstration to a good audience. The president of the Southland Battalion of the Boys’ Brigade (Captain J. Boyd) was present, and inspected the company, afterwards delivering an address to parents (a large number of whom were present) and boys. The Life Boys’ director (Mr J. Selwyn) also made an inspection and delivered a suitable address to the boys and their parents. The inspecting officers expressed satisfaction with the progress of the companies, Mr Selwyn giving special praise to the efficiency of the Life Boys. Mr A. B. Helm, on behalf of the parents, expressed thanks to the officers and leaders for their work and the interest taken in the boys. An enjoyable programme was gone through as follows: —Parade roll call, hymn, Scripture lessons, Life Boys (a) figure marching; (b) physical exercises; (c) game, “Hopping Jenny”; Boys’ Brigade (a) company drill; (b) physical exercises. The following were the badge _ and certificate winners:—Boys’ Brigade, promotions: Pte. Gordon Patrick to be L. CpL; L. Cpl. D. Smith to be Cpl, Cpl Finlayson to be sergeant. Yearly Stars —Sergt. Finlayson, Cpl. Smith and Pte. G. MacDougall. Wayfarers’ Certificates —Privates G. Trembath, C. Pemberton, R. Parkin, H. Wilson, F. .Wilson. Wayfarers’ Badge—Sergt. Finlayson, Cpl. Smith, Pte. D. Hunter, Pte. A. Blacke. Education Certificate—Sergt. Finlayson, Cpl. Smith, Pte. Hunter, Pte. Patrick. Swimming badge—Sergt. Finlayson. Boys’ Brigade Week prizes—Cpl. Smith, Pte. Pemberton. Best all-round boy for year—Sergt. Finlayson. Badges for Life Boys were awarded as follows: D. Helm, R. King, D. MacDougall, K. McFadgen, W. Pearsey, B. Patrick, W. Rose, G. Spencer, M. Turner, I. Todd, C. Todd, R Wilson, G. Wilson, D. Frew. Special prizes for all round efficiency were awarded to D. Helm and G. MacDougall. School Jubilee. Those associated with the Tihaka (Oraki) School are making great preparations to fittingly celebrate the jubilee which is to take place on January 29 and 30. The school was erected fifty years ago. The late Mr John Orr was the first chairman, and for many years later Mr James Laurie, still ot Tihaka, filled the position. The committee are providing an attractive programme. „ Public Meeting. A public meeting convened by the Mayor was fairly well attended. In explaining the object of the meeting, the chairman said it was called lor two purposes (1) for discussing the holding of the annual school picnic; and (2) the collecting of funds lor crippled children. With regard to the latter the question had been brought up at a recent meeting of the Borough Council and a list had been opened. Mr J A. Walker, chairman of the School Committee, outlined what had been done last year as regards the annual picnic. The secretary (Mr D. Matheson) he said had carried out his part most efficiently, and, as a result the outing resulted in a profit ot £l2 12/-. After a shotr discussion it was resolved to hold the annual picnic at Gore the first week in FebruaryThe following were appointed a committee to carry out the picnic: Messrs H J. Walden, H. C. Johnstone T. Borland J- A. Walker, W. G. Smith, F. L. Girvan, W. Smyth and D. F. MacDougall A letter was read from Mr McDonald, chairman of the Southland branch of Crippled Childrens Fund, asking that steps be taken to collect money. Those present expressed approval ot the proposal and the following commit--tee, with power to add, was el e cte ° : Mrs H. C. Johnstone, Messrs W- G-. Smith, F. L. Girvan and Captain Elliott. Bowls.
The first singles match of the season was played on Riverton green on Wednesday between W. J. Weir and RL Girvan for the fem trophy. The former (the holder) defeated his opponent by 20 to 12.
