VICE-REGAL VISIT

CIVIC RECEPTION. TUESDAY’S PROGRAMME. Arrangements are now fully in train to g7ve his Excellency the GovernorGeneral, Lord Galway, a rousing welcome to the city when he pays his first visit to Southland next week. The programme for welcoming and enter taining Lord and Lady Galw-ay 2? OI J the same lines as that for the Roya visit in January and the Vice-Regal visit in February. , Their Excellencies have taken advantage of the southern cruise of the Government lighthouse steamer Matai to make the acquaintance of people) m this part of the Dominion. The Matai will arrive at Bluff between 9 and 10 o’clock on Tuesday morning. An official reception will be tendered the ViceRegal party by the Mayor (the Rev. A. E. Waite) on behalf of the people of Bluff. The reception which is scheduled for 10 o’clock, will be followed by morning tea. No official arrangements have been made for the next hour or two, and it is probable that their Excellencies will make use of the time in viewing some of the attractions of the country. They will arrive in Invercargill by car. Arrival At Queen’s Park.

Shortly before 2.30 Lord and Lady Galway will travel through the city via Dee street past the Soldiers’ Memorial, along Victoria Avenue to the intersection with Kelvin Road, and then through the Memorial Gates. ThenExcellencies will be escorted up Coronation Avenue by the Caledonian Pipe Band of Southland and they will then inspect the guard of honour, which will be drawn up close to the dais. It being their turn by rotation, the guard of honour will on this occasion be supplied by the Southland Boys High School Cadets. Then will follow the address of welcome, which will be presented by his Worship the Mayor, Mr John Miller, at 2.40 p.m. At 2.50 the city councillors and their wives, Southland members of Parliament and prominent citizens will be presented to their Excellencies. At ten minutes past three the GovernorGeneral will inspect school children, Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, returned soldiers, returned nurses and other formed bodies. The function will conclude with the National Anthem at 3.30. At 5.30 his Excellency will pay an informal visit to the Invercargill Club, Don street, while Lady Galway will at the same time pay a visit to the Southland Women’s Club. In the event of the weather being wet the reception will take place in the Civic Theatre instead of at Queen’s Park. The Mayor has requested all citizens and employers of labour to close their business premises from 2 o’clock till 4. A similar request has been made with regard to both primary and secondary schools. Special Accommodation.

The Mayor has again made arrangements for special seating accommodation for elderly people in an enclosure on the eastern side of the rotunda at Queen’s Park. All those who wish to take advantage of this privilege have been requested to apply to the Town Clerk on Monday for the necessary tickets.

Yesterday the invitations were issued for the guests for the reception. These will number about 150 and will include city councillors and their wives, representatives of all local bodies in Southland and public organizations. In order that the city may present a festive appearance and that the people’s welcome may be garnished by some show of colour for this first visit of his Majesty’s new representative, business people and city residents have been requested to make a good display of bunting.
