The Hon. J. A. Hanan, M.L.C., Chancellor of the New Zealand University, is at present visiting Invercargill. Mr T. S. Muirhead, Waimatuku, who recently underwent a severe operation, is now making satisfactory progress in Park Hospital. Mr D. G. Gordon, representing Dominion Motors, Ltd., who has been on a visit to Invercargill, travelled to Dunedin by the afternoon express yesterday. The death is announced of Mr William Christopher Ellis, Deputy-Mayor of Northcote, aged 64, after a brief illness. He was born in Auckland and was a councillor for eight years.—Press Association message.

For his valuable research work in zoology Dr W. B. Benham (Professor of Biology at the Otago University) is to be awarded the Hector Memorial Medal. The medal will be presented to Dr Benham at the annual meeting of the Otago Institute next Tuesday evening.

The death has occurred of Mrs H. P. Washbourn, a very widely respected resident of Nelson since the earlier days of the settlement, states a Press Association message. Dr H. E. A. Washbourn (Nelson) and Mr F. Washbourn (Timaru) are sons. Another son, Dr H. O. Washbourn, of Richmond, died a few years ago.

Guests at the Grand Hotel include Messrs H. D. Marshall (Dunedin), W. Matthews (Dunedin), A. W. Osborne (Dunedin), D. Eric Ireland (Wellington), S. G. Forbes (Wellington), H. P. Twose (Wellington), G. Glennie (Wellington), Edgar Hazlett (Dunedin), Leo Rothschild (Wellington), James Macassey (Dunedin) and C. J. Bell (Dunedin). Mr Malcolm Leadbetter, M.A., first assistant at St. Andrew’s College, Christchurch, has been appointed rector of the Waimate High School. Mr Leadbetter, who is aged 32, has had 15 years’ experience in teaching, and secured first place for New Zealand in the degree examinations for pure mathematics and physics. He is also a noted athlete, having been nominated for the Olympic Games in 1928—Press Association.

The Rev. Principal J. Dickie, D.D., was congratulated yesterday by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand on the attainment of his silver jubilee and was reappointed for a further term as Principal of the Theological College, Dunedin, in which capacity he has served for the last seven years, states a Wellington Press Association message. A minute paying high tribute to and expressing appreciation of his character and work was passed enthusiastically.

A prominent passenger on the Wanganella, which arrived at Auckland on Wednesday from Sydney, was Sir Frederick H. Tout, M.L.C., of New South Wales. He is accompanied by his son, Ma S. F. Tout. Sir Frederick, who was knighted by the King earlier this year, is a solicitor by profession and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council. He was a member of the Australian delegation to the Ottawa Conference. He also has extensive farming interests in New South Wales, and for five years was president of the Graziers’ Association for that State. In addition, Sir Frederick is a member of the principal board of the Australian Mutual Provident Society. It is on the business of the society that he is visiting the Dominion, where he will remain until November 29 before returning to Sydney.
