VAGRANT VERSE
HEAVEN’S LOAN.
(Written for the Southland Times.')
The words we use are not our own They come from out the dateless past; So are but given to us on loan And for a time we hold them fast; And man is earth and of the earth, Yet words can bring our souls to birth.
Words lift us all above the beast, Yet we are poor as poor can be; Bjelow the angel that at least And little gain on earth we see; Unless we pay the Lord His own The interest due on Heaven’s loan. ’Tis true a flash of angel wings May visit those poor fields of earth, And. yet the soul to dust but clings And feeds on husks and suffers dearth, Unless we pay the Lord His own The interest due on tieaven’s loan. The words we use are not our own But whisperings of the zvorld’s soul; They pass us by and they are gone, For ever then beyond control, Yet we must pay the Lord His own, The interest due on Heaven’s loan. —G.R.
