TEMPERANCE UNION

YOUNG PEOPLE’S BRANCH. ANNUAL CONVENTION. At the annual convention of the Southland District Young People’s Christian Temperance Union. The keynote of the meeting was “victory.” The roll call was answered by the following “Y” branches: Central, 6; South, 5; North, 7; Waikiwi, 2; and Winton, 2. After the singing of some choruses papers were given by the following. - Mr Eric Gray, South Branch (“How to Secure Victory in Our Christian Life”); Mr G. Bentley, Central (“How to Secure Victory in Our ‘Y’ Work”); Mr S. Guthrie, North (“How to Secure Victory in the Coming Poll”). A solo “The Better Land” was sung by Miss McColl. As an appreciation of his work in connection with the “Y” debaters’ class. Pastor V. Stafford was made a small presentation by Mr H. McLean and Mr E, Grenfel endorsed the remarks of the previous speaker. Mr Stafford suitably replied. The meeting was addressed by the Rev. A. E. Waite, of Bluff, who gave an inspiring message to those present. Mrs Pasley spoke and then called upon Mrs McDonald, daughter of Mrs J. Wesney, to present to the South Branch the banner which had been won by it with a membership of 79, being 51 financial and 28 unfinancial members. Mrs Wesney presented this banner some four years ago for competition among the town branches and it has been won in turn by the South, Central and North branches. In view of this being toll year it was agreed that the winners for 1935 should retain the banner for all time and it now becomes the property of the South branch. Mrs McDonald made the presentation and Miss S. Pasley received it on behalf of the South members. A discussion on the extension of the “Y” work took place and it is hoped in the coming year to form branches in various country centres. The following officers were elected for tjie ensuing year: President, Mr S. Guthrie; vice-presidents, Miss J. Cawthome, Mr J. Botting and Mr E. Grenfel; recording secretary, Mr F. McLean; corresponding secretary, Miss Ola Tosh; reporter, Miss Joyce Evans; treasurer, Mr H. McLean; superintendent, Mrs Pasley. On Sunday evening, November 3, a well-attended church parade was held at the Church of Christ and Pastor Stafford was the preacher. DEBATERS’ CLASS. At the final meeting of “Y” Debaters’ Class for the 1935 session four members took part in prepared speeches, own subject, and prepared reading from Isaiah 40: v. 1-10. The Rev. A. G. Mackintosh Carter judged the speeches, the results being as follows:—S. Guthrie (“Emotions”) 1, Miss Joyce Evans and F. McLean (equal) 2, Miss Gwen Pearce 3. The placing for the reading was: Miss Gwen Pearce 1, S. Guthrie and F. McLean (equal) 2, Miss J. Evans 3. Pastor Stafford was the judge for the reading section. Both judges were thanked for their judging and helpful criticism and Pastor Stafford was thanked for his work as leader of the class during 1935.
