NIGHTCAPS NOTES

SCHOOL COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Nightcaps School Committee was held on Monday night. The chairman, Mr W. Excell, presided and the following members were present: Messrs E. Mason, J. D. Sinclair, John Grant, P. Grant, A. Tinker and D. Sinclair (secretary). The headmaster, Mr O. V. Berry was also in attendance. Prior to the commencement of the meeting the chairman extended a welcome to the newly elected committeeman, Mr A. Tinker. Mr Tinker had been associated with many public organizations notably the Boy Scouts Committee and Ex-Pupils’ Association and the chairman said he hoped Mr Tinker’s association with the School Committee would be a pleasant one for himself and beneficial to the committee. Mr Tinker returned thanks.

The secretary read a letter which had been forwarded to the Southland Education Board in connection with certain arrangements entered into regarding suitable accommodation in Nightcaps for the housing of a Form 111.

The chairman said this letter had come before the board at its last meeting and the board were agreeable to the proposals and an official reply to this effect should be forthcoming at an early date. The matter of conveying Ohai pupils to and from the High School had been discussed at the board meeting, said Mr Excell, and .he board did not think the timetable as at present in operation on the Ohai Railway. Board’s line would be a suitable one. Mr Excell (who is a member of the Ohai Railway Board) said he had placed the matter before Mr Rodgers (General Manager of the Ohai Railway Board) who had stated that his board would arrange a timetable suitable to pupils attending the high school in Nightcaps. As Ohai is over five miles distant from Nightcaps an allowance would be made for conveyance and this would cover the charge it was proposed by the Ohai Railway Board to make. These arrangements were deemed to be entirely satisfactory. An appeal for funds and co-operation was received from the Crippled Children’s Society. The letter gave details of proposals by which it was hoped local supporting committees would be set up. After some discussion it was decided that the headmaster call a meeting of representatives of social and public bodies for November 18 when the committee would be present and the matter of assisting the appeal gone into. Financial. It was reported that the series of card evenings conducted by the committee had resulted in the excellent credit of approximately £l7. This was considered to be very gratifying and the public were to be thanked for their splendid support. It was decided that the outstanding debt on the basketball and tennis court be liquidated as funds permit. The headmaster reported that the school roll stood at 139 for the month of October with an average attendance of 132 for that month. The average for the last week had been 135.3. litis was considered satisfactory. Mr D. Sinclair brought up the matter of endeavouring to arrange an instructional visit to the Rosedale Woollen Mills for senior children. These visits had been arranged in past years and were deemed to be interesting and instructive. After some discussion it was decided that such a visit be arranged for Standard 6 pupils. The committee members being agreeable to provide transport, it was decided to endeavour to arrange for Standard 6 pupils to visit the Rosedale Woollen Mills, probably during the morning of People’s Day of the Southland Show. Vital Statistics. The following are the vital statistics for October, those for the same month last year being given in parentheses.— Births 3 (0), marriages 0 (0), deaths 0 (2). The Unemployed. The certifying officer at Nightcaps reports that there were 25 registered unemployed under all schemes at the end of October as compared with 23 at the end of September. The increase of two is considered in a satisfactory light as the principal occupation in the district, coalmining, is a very seasonable one and it is usual for many coal mine workers to be put off about this period. There was a good attendance at the weekly Flag 500 tournament conducted by the school committee last week. The winners were: First, Mrs Hunt, Miss M. Pemberton and Mr W. Excel!; second, Miss Rita Grant, Mr John Grant, Mr R. Scott. Bowling Notes. A challenge for the Western District Stars held by a Nightcaps rink, was played on Saturday last, a rink from the Aparima Club being the challengers. The green was in good order and the holders had the better of the game throughout and ran out winners by 25 to 15. The players were: Nightcaps, R. Sheddan (s), J. Spowart, J. Johnstone, J. White; Aparima, W. Spencer (s), Mills, McDougall, Philp. The Nightcaps club men’s singles championship for 1934-35 have been, finalized. In the semi-final Watt defeated Cochrane 21—20 and the final between Watt and Rutherford resulted in Rutherford winning after a close game by 14—11. In the ladies’ singles championship for 1934-35, Mrs Reed defeated Mrs Excell in the final by 18 to 14. The men’s doubles are nearing completion and the following are the results of games played to date:—J. Spowart and J. White beat T. Robertson and W. Excell 24—17; R. Cochrane and J. Duncan beat J. Spowart and J. White 21 —19; T. Robertson and W. Excel! beat R. Rutherford and J. Greenhow 20—19. Personal. The Rev. E. B. Stevenson and Mrs Stevenson left on Monday for Wellington. Heller (Ohai) are attending a conference of P.W.M.U. delegates also being held in Wellington. Mr A. J.
