STEWART ISLAND NEWS

R.S.A. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Stewart Island branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was held on Monday evening, November 4. Mr J. Sloan presided. The question of the celebration of Armistice Day was discussed and in view of the fact that neither of the churches have at present a recognized minister in charge, it was decided that for this year the usual practice of holding a combined service in the hall be cancelled and that the individual churches be asked to hold appropriate services. At the last meeting it was decided to hold the annual ball on Armistice night, but as it has since transpired that this night would probably be unsuitable for many people, it was decided to hold it on Friday, November 8. Unemployed. • This week there are 30 men on the unemployed as the fishing season for this year is practically finished. The men are engaged upon general improvement work in the township and on the county roads. Governor-General’s Visit. The chairman of the Stewart Island County Council has received official word that his Excellency the GovernorGeneral, Lord Galway, accompanied by Lady Galway, will pay an official visit to Stewart Island on Thursday, November 14.
