OTAUTAU NOTES

ODDFELLOWSHIP APARIMA LODGE (From Our Correspondent.) Last week the members of the Aparima Lodge, 1.0.0. F., journeyed to Drummond to take part in the halfyearly installation of officers of the Royal Oak Lodge. The following acted as installing officers: D.D.G.M. Bro. D. Brown; D.D.G. Warden, Bro. D. C. Sutherland; D.D.G. Marshal, Bro. J. Lindsay; D.D.G. Secretary, Bro. C. D. Mills; D.D.G. Treasurer, Bro. W. Sheedy; D.D.G. Chaplain, Bro. D. C. Sutherland; and D.D.1.G., Bro. H. Bone. The following were installed into the respective chairs: P.G., Bro. H. Stuart; N.G., Bro. A. Galt; R.S.S.N.G., Bro. G. Catto; L.S.S.N.G., Bro. S. Stuart; V.G., Bro. M. Taylor; secretary, Bro. D. Brown; treasurer, Bro. D. Chilton; Chaplain, Bro. C. McKenzie; Warden, Bro. A. Taylor; Conductor, Bro. T. Johnstone; Inside Guardian, Bro. R. Lindsay; R.S.S., Bro. J. Laughton; L.S.S., Bro. E. Laughton. A social hour was afterwards spent, when D.D.G M., Bro. D. Brown took the opportunity to welcome the visiting brethren and thanked them for assisting with the installation. Bro. C. McKenzie said he had been in touch with the Aparima Lodge for a number of years, and to see some of the old members present that evening was just like meeting old friends. These remarks were supported by N.G. Bro. A. Galt. P.G. Bro. D. C. Sutherland responded on behalf of the visitors. Tennis.

The A grade Western District competition match, Otautau v. Ohai, was played on the Otautau courts on Saturday, when the local team recorded a win by 12 sets (99 games), to 4 sets (92 games). Following were the results, Ohai names being mentioned first:—

Sutherland 7, Mesdames Baird and Kitto 5 v. Misses M. Porteous and W. Gonley 7. Men’s Doubles: R. Bird and Horner 6 v. J. Gazzard and A. Harrington 9, Lees and R. Raper 9 v. W. Sutherland and H. Macpherson. The B grade combined doubles competition in connection with the Labour Day tournament was finalized on Tuesday evening on the Otautau courts under ideal weather conditions. The semi-final was played between Mrs Ferguson and H. Ferguson, Ohai (rec. 1-6) and Mrs Walker and Ludke, Tuatapere (owe 15), the former winning 7—2. Mr and Mrs Joll (rec 2-6) met Mrs Walker and Ludke in the final and after a keen icontest the former ran out winners 7—2. The semi-finals of the A grade combined doubles is to be played at Nightcaps on Saturday between Miss Galloway and R. Hunter (Riverton) and Mrs Malcolm and N. Irwin (Nightcaps), and the winner is to play Miss Burgess and Burgess in the final. Progressive League. There was a fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the Progressive League on Monday evening. Mr W. J. Wesney, (vice-president), was elected president for the ensuing year, and on taking the chair he said the league had done good work in the past. With the co-operation of the members it would accomplish more useful work in the future. The Conservator of Forests notified that the survey of timber lands at the head of the Purakino Valley was now under way, and the president was delegated to call a special meeting if this was deemed necessary. The same writer wrote, in reply to the league’s request that the re-afforeSl- - of the “cut out” timber area on the waterworks and scenic reserves be proceeded with, that the Otautau Town Board had jurisdiction over this area. His department was prepared to lend a man to the board with a view to offering advice as to what was best to do when the board decided to make an inspection. He also recommended that the controlling authority establish a small nursery on one of its reserves and start growing its own seedlings. It was resolved that a copy of the letter be forwarded to the Town Board, requesting that the matter be taken up, and suggesting that the recommendation be adopted. The chairman of the Town Board and the president of the league were authorized to arrange a conference with representatives of the Wallace A. and P. Association with the object of discussing with the interested" property owners the proposed new road to allow the inclusion of the new area with the recreation ground. It was decided that the sub-commit-tee be empowered to spend up to £2 on improvements to the children’s swimming pool in the Otautau stream if same was considered necessary, and that the league hold a swimming carnival on a date to be arranged later. It was resolved that the PostmasterGeneral be written to requesting that a stamp-selling machine be installed in the post office vestibule or letter box lobby. Scottish Society. The Otautau branch of St. Andrew’s Scottish Society celebrated Hallowe’en on Friday evening, when there was a large attendance. Chief D. McCrostie occupied the chair, and welcomed the party from Edendale, who were to provide the greater part of the programme. The following contributed items: Selection, Pipe-Major Millar; Highland Fling, Miss Nancy Maxwell; song, Master McEwan; Scotch Reel, Misses Meta and Nannie McLeod and Nancy Maxwell; monologue, Mrs McEwan; duet, Mrs Monogan and Miss Cranstoun; recitation, Master McEwan; dialogue, Mr and Mrs McEwan; solo, Mrs Monogan; seann triubhais, Miss Nannie McLeod; solo, Miss Cranstoun; sword dance, Misses Nancy Maxwell and Nannie McLeod; playette, Mr and Mrs McEwan and Miss Cranstoun.

The Rev. McEwan gave an interesting and instructive address on Hallowe’en, instancing some of the quaint customs in connection with that event in the Homeland. At the conclusion of the programme Chief McCrostie moved a hearty vote of thanks to the performers, the accompanistes (Mrs Cuppies, Miss Cranstoun) and Mr J. Miller, and all who had contributed to the success of the entertainment. The haggis was piped in with due ceremony, and after grace had been said hot potatoes and haggis were handed round prior to supper being served. Fruit and peanuts were also handed out to the children. Dancing was afterwards indulged in, the first waltz being played by Mrs Cuppies, Misses Salton, McFadgen and Angus, after which the Green Valley Orchestra took charge. Extras were played by Messrs D. Hawthorne and L. McDonnell. Mr Thomas Brown officiated as M.C. Methodist Church.

A Biblical playette was given in the Methodist Church on Tuesday evening by the young ladies of the Bible

class, the function being held in aid of overseas missions. There was a fair attendance of the public. Prior to the commencement Miss Harrington outlined the characters, the various parts instancing happenings in the life of Christ, the crucifixion, healing of the blind. The costumes accorded with the theme, and the various parts were well portrayed by the following: Rich young Ruler, Miss Margaret Malcolm; Azaneth, his wife, Miss Mary Brooker; Ajar, Gladys Coster; Hadasseth, the child’s nurse, Miss Jean Coster; Johanen, Miss Sybil Wesney; Zaccheus, the publican, Miss Ruby Searle; Nathan, chief Steward, Miss Edith Hill; Leah and Miriam, Misses Elsie Malcolm and Marion Coster. Social Items. Misses Maud Harvey and M. Steward, Invercargill, spent Labour Day visiting friends in the township. Misses R. and M. Campbell motored through to Christchurch to spend a holiday with friends. Mrs Porteous is spending a few days in Dunedin. Mr and Mrs W. Millar, Invercargill, were the guests of Miss M. Malcolm, “Meadowbank,” Bayswater, for a few days. Misses Humphries (2) spent Labour Day in Otautau, Mrs R. S. Harrington was visiting friends in Otautau last week-end. The engagement is announced of Jean, second daughter of Mr and Mrs J. F. Ferguson, Orepuki, and Tui Jesse Palmer, fourth son of Mr and Mrs J. Palmer, Merrivale Road, Otautau. Mr J. Harvey, Invercargill, spent last week-end with Mr and Mrs R. Brown, King street. Mrs J. B. Cuppies left this week to spend a holiday in the North Island. Messrs D. McGregor and G. H.
