HEALTH CAMP

CHANCE TO HELP TO-DAY THIS YEAR’S ACTIVITIES To-day the Southland Health Camp Association makes its direct appeal for assistance from the public by holding a street day. The association’s work in the interests of under-nourished children has won wide recognition and has achieved splendid results. The home which was built last year at Omaui is ready to receive children for the summer holidays. The association’s intention is to hold one camp for 26 boys and girls for a month commencing on December 28 and to give a month’s holiday to another batch of 26 from January 28. The children will be drawn from all parts of the province. , . It costs from 10/- to 12/6 a week for each child. This year all the staff will be paid travelling expenses and a salary. This will add to the expenditure and is another reason why a generous response from the public is sought/ The whole staff has already been appointed, Mi’s Bain Challis being camp commandant. Two Home Science students will be in charge of the kitchen; and there will be a laundress and five assistants for the children.

During the second month the camp will really be an open-air school. Two of the assistants will be replaced by two teachers appointed by the Education Department. The remainder of the staff will be in office for the full two months.

Through the generosity of two Invercargill firms the clothing committee has been relieved of worry so far as footwear and singlets are concernd® and is also well equipped with pyjamas, dresses, shirts and trousers for the children. Hats and bathing costumes are still required. But the most urgent need is money for the running of the camp, and it is this want which the association hopes to fill by to-day’s street collection. The use of health stamps by Southlanders will also assist the association, the money from this source being available for health camps.
