SEVERE ’QUAKE

CANADA AND AMERICA EASTERN PROVINCES ROCKED VERY LITTLE DAMAGE (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 8 p.m.) Toronto, November 1. An earthquake, severe in some areas, shook nearly all Eastern Canada and extended into the eastern part of the United States about 1.5 a.m. to-day, disconnecting telephone communications with some parts of Ottawa and alarming thousands of people throughout Ontario, Quebec and the maritime provinces. The shocks lasted about 15 seconds in most districts, shaking buildings and moving furniture and pictures. A message from New York says it is reported that a house crumbled at Syracuse. Shocks were felt in New England, extending along the Massachusetts Coast, west to Windsor (Ontario), Detroit (Michigan) and Cleveland (Ohio). A sharp shock rocked half a dozen cities in upper New York Shue. Large buildings were shaken in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Elmira, Plattsburg and other towns.

The first tremor was felt in New York State for about 30 seconds and was quickly followed by a second in some localities.

The Rev. J. J. Lynch, seismologist of Fordham University, said they were probably surface disturbances, and harmless. In many parts of Canada and the United States people ran into the streets.
