GARDEN CLUB
FORMATION AT OTAUTAU. A large number of enthusiasts assembled in the reading room of the Otautau Town Hall on Wednesday evening to consider the formation of a Garden Club in the township. Messrs Girvan and Tracy King from Riverton were present by invitation. Mr A. A. Liddell, chairman of the Town Board, presided. The chairman, in welcoming the visitors, said they were deeply indebted to them for coming up to Otautau that evening, and their presence showed that they had the interests o£ the Garden Club at heart. He considered that the club was a necessity in any district, and in time it would be a benefit and credit to Otautau and to Southland if a branch were formed here.
Mr Girvan outlined the steps to be taken in the formation of the club, and demonstrated that there was a need for one in the district.
Mr King also supported Mr Girvan’s remarks, and at the conclusion the chairman expressed his thanks to the visitors for their interesting address.
After consideration it was decided to form a club to be known as the Otautau. Garden Club.
The following office-bearers were elected: President, Mr W. J. Wesney; vice-presidents, Miss Gould, Messrs H. W. D. Gazzard, D. Mitchell and N. McFadgen; secretary and treasurer, Miss D. Harrington; auditor, Mr A. A. Liddell; executive, the foregoing officials, with power to add. The subscription was fixed at 2/6 for seniors and 1/- for juniors under 16. The offer of Mr Girvan to provide a paper on “The Treatment of Annuals” was accepted with thanks.
