Last evening the Dominion Meteorologist issued the following information: An intense cyclonic depression still covers the North Island, but is losing intensity; an anti-cyclone is advancing from Eastern Australia on to the Tasman Sea. Forecast: Winds westerly at first north of Kawhia and East Cape, and otherwise south-easterly to southerly prevailing; moderate to strong generally and reaching gale force at places north of Farewell Spit and Akaroa, but decreasing to-morrow. Seas in New Zealand waters rough to high north of Farewell Spit and Akaroa, and elsewhere moderate to rather rough. Eastern Tasman Sea: Strong southerly winds, gradually moderating; seas rough in the northern portion and moderate in the southern portion. Weather unsettled, dull and misty, with rain in most districts and heavy falls in parts of the North Island and the north-east portion of the South Island; mainly fair, however, in Westland and improving gradually elsewhere from to-morrow. Temperatures cold.

One of the best of New Zealand’s many veronicas is Hulkeana, which comes originally from Marlborough and has won fame in England. In few places in the world can such a mass of Hulkeana be seen as alongside the wooden part of Parliament Buildings in Wellington, that side of the wooden building (once Government House) which runs roughly parallel with Molesworth street. Here, between the path and the wall, all the space is Hulkeana except for the intrusion of a rather out-of-place geranium. Coaxed by the warm rains, Hulkeana is breaking into flower. In a day or two it will be a mass of bloom, perhaps a record aggregation of a distinctive species of which New Zealand may be proud. The lilac flowers are born in profusion, and the plant is sometimes called New Zealand lilac.
