LAND CLAIMS
SOUTH ISLAND MAORIS. PLEA FOR PAYMENTS. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, September 12. The land claims of the South Island Maoris were mentioned in the House of Representatives this evening by Mr E. T. Tirikatene, who urged the payment of compensation. He said he was ashamed to say it, but the South Island Maoris were poor. At the time of the land purchases, when 20,000,000 acres had been purchased from them for a nominal sum the Maoris were promised that certain lands would be reserved for them and their offspring. From that day to, this that promise had never been filled. The commission in 1925 had advised the Government that £250,000 would be little enough to compensate the Maoris for their claims, but no Government had taken that into consideration since. “It is a debt that is worthy of payment,” said Mr Tirikatene, “and I suggest that the Government, if it .is at all possible, should listen to the appeal of these people.”
