Calculating on life insurance statistics that the annual average loss of 150 persons in New Zealand by drowning worked out at a loss to the country of £1,125,000, Mr D. Saunders, educational officer to the Auckland Swimming Centre, asked the centre to impress on the Government the urgent necessity for more attention to swimming tuition in schools. Mr Saunders’s argument was based on the observation that most of those lost by drowning were persons in their twenties. He said that 1 per cent, of the loss quoted by him in sterling would be £11,250, and to make his point that swimming tuition in schools was neglected he added that the Government subsidy was only £2OO a year, and that only 26 per cent, of the Standard VI. pupils in the primary schools of New Zealand were certified swimmers.
