WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Leveson Gower: Family name of the the Earl of Granville. Loo’sun Gore. Koki Ilirota: Japanese Minister. Ko’kee Hee-ro’tah. Piccard: The first o£ the stratospherists. Pee-car, not pick-card. Willa Cather: American novelist. Will’a Cath’er, the surname rhyming with “gather.” Santayana: Philosopher and poet. San-ta-ya’na, with all the “a’s” as in “ah.” Goering: Prussian premier and Germany’s Air Minister. His name rhymes with “purring” and “stirring,” but while he is rarely the first, he is always the second. Goebbels: Nazi Publicity chief. His name is pronounced as if spelt ( Gurb’bels, with the “r” not sounded.
