BOWLS

WESTERN DISTRICT SUB-CENTRE FORMED . . (From Our Correspondent.) A meeting was held on Wednesday evening to consider the formation of a Western District Bowling Sub-Centre, when the following clubs were represented: Messrs F. Moore (Winton), F. Tilley (Central, Winton), H. Philp (Aparima), Girvan and H. Hogg (Riverton), T. C. Hardy and Dr. Dodds (Tuatapere), Messrs H. Gazzard (Nightcaps), G. Sinclair, T. H. Walker, G. B. Bums, H. L. Chandler and J. Kirk (Otautau). Messrs Irvine (president), J. C. Thomson (secretary) and S. Smith (delegate of the Western District) of the Southland Bowling Centre, were also in attendance. Mr Irvine presided, and said it was desirable that a Western District SubCentre should be formed, and he took it that clubs which were not represented that evening would fall in line I with any proposals that might be carried. The speaker outlined the activities of the Eastern Sub-Centre and said that Western District was practically on the same footing, the former having six clubs with a membership of 120 and the latter eight clubs with 150. The Tapanui Club was in much the same position as Orepuki, having a small membership, and games with that club were limited to three rinks. A championship competition, singles, rinks and pairs, was played in one dtiy, with seven players from each club, and a cup for most points went with the competition. The winning club had the right the following year to play the championships on their own green. In addition a Town v. Country match was played every year, and in this connection he suggested that Winton and Riverton could play the rest of the clubs. The formation of the Tuatapere Club had given an added stimulus to bowling in the district, and if the proposed project were carried out a series of competitions could be arranged, which would develop a high standard of play, and lead to closer relationships between the clubs. They had the material and a fine lot of greens, and it was simply a matter of getting down to business and forming a sub-centre. Mr Chandler inquired what benefits would accrue from the formation, and stated that they were well satisfied with ’ the treatment meted out to them by the Southland Centre. Mr Irvine replied that they would control their own affairs, and he considered it would be of material benefit to bowlers in the Western District. The cost of running the sub-centre would be infinitesimal. On the motion of Messrs Tilley and Girvan it was unanimously decided that a sub-centre be formed in the Western District, and that Otautau be the headquarters. The following office-bearers were elected: President, Mr G. Sinclair; secretary, Mr J. Kirk; executive, Messrs Philp and McDougall (Riverton), Eccleton and Girvan (Riverton), Tilley and W. Balch (Central. Winton), J. Butler and F. Moore (Winton), Weiland Garden (Orepuki), Hardy and Dr. Dodds (Tuatapere), Messrs Sinclair and Chandler (Otautau) and W. Excell and T. Robertson (Nightcaps); fixtures committee, Messrs H. Philp and P. J. Eccleton (Riverton). It was resolved that 5/- be levied on each club for administrative expenses. . and that the fixtures be arranged on the same lines as last year. ’ It was decided that a championship ’ singles, rinks and pairs’ tournament > | be played at the end of January, 1936, ' the date being left in the hands of the ( fixtures committee. The president > secretary and superintendent were apJ pointed an emergency committee to , deal with any disputes that might arise

3 on that day. It was resolved to apply ’ to the Southland Centre for a cup for ) the championship. 5 The question of the arranging of ’ ladies’ matches in the Western Dis- ) trict was brought up, Mr Tilley sug- > gesting that a ladies’ committee with a j secretary be appointed. > Mr Irvine stated that these could be , mutually arranged. > ’ THE WINTON CLUB. > ANNUAL MEETING. i (From Our Correspondent.) i At the annual general meeting oi 1 members of the Winton Bowling Club J on Monday evening the president, Mr > J. T. Butler, presided over an attend--1 ance of 16. Mr Butler presented Mrs J. Black- . man with the ladies’ championship ' trophy, donated by Mrs M. Driscoll. The recipient suitably replied. Mr Butler said the club had experi- ' enced a successful season, the finances I commencing with a credit of £8 8/11, and ending with a credit balance of £9 1/5. More bowling had been played : last year than in any other season. The men’s singles championship had been , won by Mr J. Ure and the ladies’ singles by Mrs J. Blackman. Messrs J. and R. Ure won the men’s championship doubles competition. The club [ had lost three valued members, Messrs P. A. Bradley, J. Ure and R. Ure, through removal from the district and he wished them success in their new spheres. The chairman moved the adoption of the balance-sheet, the motion being seconded by Mr J. A. Broom and carried. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Patron, Mr P. A. de la Perrelle; president, Mr J. T. Butler; vice-presidents, Messrs F. Moore and A. Clark; secretary and treasurer, Mr H. J. Mathias; delegate to Southland Centre, Mr J. S. Brass; greenranger, Mr M. Driscoll; selectors, (men) Mr M. Driscoll, (ladies) Mr E. Ward; committee, president, vice-presidents, Messrs J. Molloy, J. Harvey and J. Blackman; auditor, Mr D. Wildey. The subscriptions were fixed on the same basis as last year with the exception of the ladies’ subscription, which was lowered by half. It was decided to open the green for the season on Wednesday, October 9, provided the date did not clash with any other club opening. Messers F. Moore, A. Clark and J. Ryan were appointed a committee in charge of the garden. Mr Butler said he would like to move a vote of thanks to the retiring secretary, Mr A. Clark, in appreciation of his past valued services. Mr Clark had carried through his work well and had been of great assistance to the club. The motion was carried by acclamation. It was decided that the club endeavour to arrange a match with a combined Edendale-Wyndham team against a Winton-Central team on the Winton green early in the season.
