BRITAIN’S DIET

NEED FOR IMPROVEMENT. MILLIONS COULD BE SPENT. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, September 10. Addressing the British Association on the economics of diet, Sir John Onemphasized the necessity for improving the diet throughout Britain, which is interesting in view of the Australian nutrition campaign. Sir John Orr explained that Britain could spend £200,000,000 a year more on food. Only families in which the weekly income averaged 20/- a head enjoyed a diet adequate for maintaining health on modern standards. He estimated that there were 20,000,000 below that economic level. The raising of their diet to the required standard would involve a 10 per cent, increase in consumption. Sir John Orr added that making agriculture prosperous and helping in its expansion was one of the most profitable methods .of Hncreasing national prosperity as the farmers’ money immediately flowed into the towns, where it stimulated industry and reduced unemployment.
