LUMSDEN NOTES

AUGUST WEATHER PLUNKET SOCIETY (From Our Correspondent.) For the month of August rain was recorded on 11 different days, but there were no heavy falls. The total rainfall was 1.73 in compared with 3.02 in. for the corresponding month in 1934. Frost occurred on seven occasions, the most severe being 15 degrees on the Ist. Snow was experienced on two occasions, but the falls were not heavy The weather generally was of a seasonal nature, with a good amount of sunshine and a fair number of moderate winds. Gales, however, were experienced on 23rd, 27th and 28th, causing a fair amount of damage to buildings. Members and mothers of the local branch of the Plunket Society assembled at the rooms on Saturday to bid farewell to Nurse Sims who has received notice of her transfer to Waikari (Christchurch). Mrs Marshall, president of _ the branch in presenting the guest with a leather handbag, referred to the excellent work that had been done in the district during the past three years by Nurse Sims.

Miss Martin referred to the good qualities of the guest and presented her with an autograph book containing the names of those present. Master Roxburgh presented Miss Sims with a bowl of flowers. Other speakers were Mesdames J. Campbell, R. Scott, N. Crosbie, R. Charleson, Nurse Sims suitably replied. The Lumsden Horticultural Society held a meeting on Monday evening when Mr H. Graham presided over the following members: Messrs F. Lansdell J. Clouston, L. S. Marshall; Mesdames, J. Clouston, J. Marshall, J. Ogilvy, H. Graham. The balance sheet of the Autumn Show was presented and disclosed a satisfactory balance. The final of the Black and White caps football competition was played on Saturday when Country Pirates defeated Lumsden by nine points to three. For • the winners R. Lynch potted a goal and McNamee scored and converted. For Lumsden Sherriff scored a try.

The Fleming Cup match on Saturday will mark the close of the season. Supporters in the Northern District are confident. Should the team be successful in holding the trophy it will come through the season with an undefeated record. Mr and Mrs R. Tomlin were extended a welcome home by the young people on Saturday when an enjoyable evening was spent in dancing. Mr James Challis, on behalf of those present, wished the newly married couple future happiness.

’ The Lumsden Ladies’ Presbyterian Guild held a successful All Nations Fair on Friday. The stalls were artistically arranged and the holders were dressed in the costumes of the different countries. The financial result of the effort was highly satisfactory. The Regent Theatre was well filled on Wednesday evening the occasion being the annual social and dance of the local branch of the Women’s Division. The hall was tastefully decorated and a large number of couples took part in the dance, the music for which was supplied by Tomlin’s Orchestra. Several items were given. The following are the results of the August golf matches:—Medal and first qualifying round: Mrs McDonald, 94—18—76; Miss Reidy, 104—26—78; Miss Maxwell 114—36—78; A. J. Earl, 78—15—63; R. Robertson, 99—33—66. Medal and second qualifying round: Miss Reidy, 97—26—71; Miss Biggar, 112—36—76; A. J. Earl, 79—14—65; W. Little, 96—29—67; J. Ogilvy, 88—21—67. Results of qualifying rounds: Mrs McDonald 191, Miss Reidy 201, Mrs Biggar 227, Miss Maxwell 228, A. J. Earl 157, B. Partridge 184, R. Scott 190, J. Ogilvy 190, W. Little 195, R. Robertson 198, L. Barraclough 212. Handicap reductions: A. J. Earl 14 to 13, W. Little 29 to 28, J. Ogilvy 21 to 20, Miss Reidy 26 to 23. Rough weather was experienced during the week-end, snow falling on Sunday. The ground was covered with about two inches of snow on Monday morning. Gardening operations have had to be suspended as a result. Fortunately lambing is not general in the district but the season will be at its height shortly.
