OBITUARY
MR THOMAS KELLY. CAREER AS TEACHER. Collapsing in Nith street at 1.45 yesterday afternoon, Mr Thomas Kelly, aged 72, a retired school teacher, died immediately. He had been suffering from heart trouble and an inquest will not be necessary. Mr Kelly was a prominent member of the teaching profession, beginning his career at the age of 22 when he was appointed assistant at the Gore school. After a year at Gore be went to Balfour, teaching there for the next four years. After a year or so at the Pahia School he was appointed to a position at the Waihopai School in July, 1893. A year later he went to Fairfax, serving there for four years. After three years at Seaward Downs he left in May, 1901, for a trip to England. Returning to New Zealand he was appointed in 1903 to take charge of the Wairekiki School (Mimihau). In 1906 he was appointed to the Brydone School. Remaining at Brydone for six years, he next served at Otatara for nine years, until 1921. The next three years were spent at Leith Valley (Otago). Mr Kelly was in 1924 appointed head teacher of the Tisbury School and he continued to teach there until his retirement in 1929. In. the two last-named schools he occupied the position of headmaster, and was widely respected both as an educationist and a man. During his retirement Mr Kelly lived at 15 Dalrymple Road.
