WOMEN’S DIVISION

GORE BRANCH MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Gore branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Soldiers’ Club rooms, Mrs J. A. Johnston occupying the chair. Correspondence was received from the Dominion Organizer of Health Camps and it was decided to hold a social afternoon at the September meeting in order to raise funds to assist this worthy object. A motion of sympathy with Mrs May in her recent bereavement was carried in the usual manner. Mrs Johnston moved a vote of thanks to the Mandeville branch of the Women’s Institute for holding a euchre party in aid of the Gore Rest Room fund. Members evinced keen interest in the demonstration on “Solaqua” by Mrs Kelly, for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. THORNBURY BRANCH. At the September meeting of the Thornbury branch of the W.D.F.U. Mrs J. Hamilton presided over a small attendance. It was decided to accede to a request from the Riverton Carnival Country Princess Committee that the W.D.F.U. cater for a dance in aid of the funds. The “Best Bloom” competition was won by Miss K. Fallow. Mrs Hamilton introduced the Rev. N. Luker, of Riverton, who delivered a most interesting and instructive address on Palestine, for which he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames C. Foster, J. Haywood, A. Lindsay and J. Hamilton. WALLACETOWN BRANCH. At the monthly meeting of the Wallactown branch of the W.D.F.U. Mrs John Gray presided over a good attendance of members. The roll call, “My Birthplace, brought replies from as far afield as Scotland to many neighbouring districts. Competitions held resulted:—Best blooms: Mrs A. C. Gray 1, Miss Ellen Scott 2, Mrs Kynaston 3. Shortbread: Mrs G. Gray 1, Mrs W. A. Gray 2, Miss Nellie Gray 3. Mrs John Gray submitted a detailed report on the Dominion Conference. Mrs Stanley Brown (Invercargill) gave a very interesting talk on the Southland health camp. The hostesses were Mesdames W. A. Gray and A. C. Gray and Miss McGearty. FORTROSE BRANCH. Tire monthly meeting of the Fortrose branch of the W.D.F.U. was held on Thursday, September 5, Mrs T. Golden presiding over a good attendance. A letter from the organizing secretary' of the Children’s Health Camp Association, asking for the branch s cooperation, was read, and it was decided to hold a card evening in aid of the Ca The l roll call, “A Verse of Schoolday Poetry,” recalled many happy memories of school days. DIPTON BRANCH. On Saturday afternoon the Dipton branch of the W.D.F.U. held its fifth birthday celebrations, Mrs D. McDonaid presiding. There was a large attendance ot members and friends as well as representatives of the Winton, South Hillend, Lumsden and Kauana branches and the Women’s Institute. Items were contributed as follows* Pianoforte solo, Miss Muriel Gray > solos, Mesdames A. Lindsay, P. Goble and McDonald, and Miss King; recitations, Mesdames J. Johnston and J. Milligan; musical item, Misses M. and G. Craig; Scottish reading, Mrs JohnAfter afternoon tea the birthday cake, made and donated by Mrs McDonald, was carried in by Mrs W. Baird, sen. Mrs W. Whitaker lighted the candles, Mrs Sparks blowing them out. Mrs W. H. Campbell, who is the oldest resident of the district, cut the cake and the presidents of the visiting branches each cut a slice. Those who extended congratulations to the Dipton branch were Mesdames Smith (Winton), R. Anderson (Kauana), Wilson (South Hillend), Allan and Ward (Lumsden), and Mrs W. H. King and Miss Stewart (Women’s Institute, Dipton). Mrs W. H. King, on behalf of the Dipton members, thanked Mrs McDonald for making and giving the cakes at each birthday held by’ the branch, Mrs McGill presenting Mrs McDonald with plate in appreciation of her work. Mrs McDonald who was accorded musical honours, suitably replied. RIMU BRANCH. The members of the Rimu branch of the W.D.F.U. met last Thursday. There was a smaller attendance than usual, only 14 members being present.’ The roll call, “A Scottish or Irish Joke,” was well responded to. The competition, a nut loaf, resulted: Mrs Little 1, Miss Carswell 2. An invitation was received from the Morton Mains branch to its birthday celebrations. MAKAREWA BRANCH. At the third birthday celebrations of the Makarewa branch of the W.D.F.U. Mrs McDowell presided, visiting presidents being Mrs T. S. Smith (Winton), who spoke on housekeeping work, and Mrs McDonald (Invercargill branch). During the evening the following programme • was contributed: —Pianoforte solo, Miss Dennis; song, Master M. Tansley; song, Mrs Malcolm; piano accordion solo, Mrs H. Field; song, Mrs A. Gray; American tap dance, Coral McDougall; song, Mr Mclvor; recitation, Miss A. Spencer; song, Miss A. Hormann; piano duet, Misses Cr°its and McDougall; song, Miss N. Watt; song, Mrs Langmuir; instrumental item, Master Paul Tansley; recitation, Miss Beryl Rhind. During the supper interval the ceremony of cutting the birthday cake was performed, Mrs McDonald lighting the candles and Mrs Smith cutting the cake, which was made by a branch members, Miss J. Cook. Dancing topk place to music supplied by Mrs and Miss McDougall. • The monthly meeting of the branch was held on Thursday, September 5, there being a fair attendance. In the absence of the president Mrs Field took the chair. A letter was received from the organizer of the Health Stamp Campaign appealing for assistance for crippled children. The delegates to the recent executive meeting read reports. An address on flowering shrubs was given by Mr B. P. Mansfield, who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The best bloom competition was won by Mrs Kidd. . . The home-made soap _ competition resulted in four ladies gaining an equal number of points.
