WINTON
Mr and Mrs I. O. Manson, of Invercargill, were the week-end guests of Mrs R. M. Gilmour, Park street. Miss J. McNaught, of Gore, spent a few days with her sister, Mrs E. Hom. Mr and Mrs W. G. Clark, and Mrs W. Clark jun., were visitors to Ohai last week for the Tomlin-Pourteous wedding. Mrs S. George, of Dunedin, who has been the guest of her sister, Mrs T. McGillivray, has returned home. Miss May Dalrymple, of Waianiwa, is holidaying in Winton. Mrs W. Clark, jun., spent a few days in Lumsden last week. Miss K. Macpherson was a week-end visitor to Invercargill. Mrs T. K. Hepburn, of Oamaru, was the guest of her daughter, Mrs H. F. Berry, for a few days last week. Miss Dorothy Sutton, “The Willows,” Otapiri, is at present spending a holiday in Christchurch.
Miss A. Holland, of Invercargill, spent the week-end at her home in Great North Road.
On Wednesday evening last the Lochiel Hall was crowded with dancers. the occasion being the annual ball of the Lochiel Young People. Excellent. music was supplied by the Bellbird Orchestra, while extras were contributed by Miss Leonard (piano) and Mr Leonard (violin). There was an attendance of some fifty players at the bridge party conducted by the social committee of the Anglican Church on Thursday evening of last week. Mrs J. G. King, and Mr H. J. Mathias were the respective winners, while Mis H. S. Kerr and Mr C. Johnston gained the hidden number prizes.
On Wednesday evening last a dance was held in the Otapiri Hall by the combined Limehills and Otapiri Basketball Clubs, the proceeds going to the representative touring team. Spirited music was supplied by Mr J. McMaster (piano) and Mr D. Brown (violin), while the supper extra was played by Miss N. Crowe. The winners of the Monte Carlo waltz were Miss M. Thompson and "Mr R. Reid. Mr C. Grant made a capable M.C.
There have been various evenings given during the week in honour of Miss Ray McKenzie and Mr T. N. Eastlake, whose marriage takes places shortly. Hostesses at kitchen, bathroom, recipe and gift evenings have been Mesdames H. F. Berry, J. P. McWilliam, J. A. Wilson and Misses M. McKenzie and H. Darnill.
At Thursday evening’s practice of the Winton Presbyterian Church choir, Mr R. M. Gilmour voiced felicitations to Miss Ray McKenzie and Mr T. R. Eastlake, whose marriage takes place shortly. Mr Gilmour remarked that it was pleasing in this instance that both members would still be retained in the choir. He asked their acceptance of a crystal salad bowl with the best wishes of their fellow members. Mr Eastlake, on behalf of Miss McKenzie and himself, expressed sincere appreciation of the kindly sentiments and handsome gift. A pleasant evening was later spent in the Sunday School Hall, when the married members entertained the single members. Musical items were rendered by Mrs L. Smart and Mr H. Cochrane, and limericks by Messrs F. Tilley, W. Henderson, G. Lindsay and J. Wilson. Competitions and table tennis also provided amusement.
At the euchre party conducted by the local branch of the R.S.A. on Thursday evening, the prize-winners were Miss E. Scobie and Mr J. Legerwood. The final of a series of euchres tinder the auspices of the Central Bowling Club was held in the Radio Tea Rooms on Monday evening. Mrs J. Gullick and Mr J. Harvey were the winners...
