WOMEN’S DIVISION

Tile monthly meeting of the Orepuki branch of .the Women’s Division was held last Thursday, Mrs J. T. Simpson presiding over a good attendance. The roll call was “Old Photographs” and proved to be one of the most interesting calls held. Two competitions were decided. The first Something new from something old,” resulted in Mrs H. Brown being first and second and Mrs J. T. Simpson third. In the second competition, “Best Plate .of Tarts” Mrs Simpson was first and third and Mrs Brown second. The hostesses were Mesdames McKeown and Feaver. Women’s Institute. The fourth birthday, of the local branch of the Women s Institute was held on Friday evening. There was a fair attendance of members, their friends and visitors. The evening took the form of dancing, games and competitions. Competitions were won by Mrs Egerton, Mrs Crowther and Misses Hurst and Pennington. A lucky spot waltz was won by Miss Morris and Mr L. Bennett. A birthday cake kindly made by Mrs Noble was carried in by Mrs Crowther to music played by Mr G. Hourston. The candles were lit by Mrs Noble and snuffed by Mrs McCaw, the cake then being cut by the president, Mrs J. Summers. A piece was handed to all those present. The prizes for the most points gained in the various competitions throughout the year resulted: Mrs P. Egerton 1, Miss McAlister 2, Mrs Morris 3. The music for the evening was supplied by Messrs H. Menpcs and G. Hourston. Basketball. On Saturday Waiau B journeyed to Orepuki to play the final game in the B grade competition of the Waiau SubAssociation. Orepuki were much the superior combination and at half-time led by eight goals to two. This was increased to 16 goals to 5 when time was called. Orepuki B have thus won the B grade competition, and have a unique record in that they have not been defeated during the season, and led by a fairly wide margin of points.

The Waiau juniors travelled to Orepuki on Saturday to play the final game of the season in the junior competition in the Western District competition. . Orepuki were much the better side and won by 19 points to 9. Orepuki have only one more game play against Western Star at Orawia, but as Nightcaps defaulted to Western Star last Saturday, the latter team now win the banner, with Orepuki as probable runners-up.
