FAITH-HEALING

REVIVAL IN BRITAIN MODERN MIRACLES “Miracles” are claimed to have resulted from the remarkable faith-heal-ing revival which has suddenly spread with Christian fervour throughout Britain. All instances of faith-healing, it is claimed, have been authenticated. The sufferers who admit benefit are drawn from all walks of life. One of the men responsible for these modern miracles is Pastor George Jeffreys, leader of the Elim Four-square Gospellers. The most recent testimony to his remarkable powers was given by Lieutenant-General Sir Herbert Holman, whose wife was cured of a deadly eye disease from which she had suffered for many weeks. “For days before the cure my wife had been in agony from a dangerous eye complaint,” he said. “Her sight was imperilled. Medical treatment was only partially successful, and she Was compelled to go about with her eye heavily bandaged. “The pain was so acute that she felt she could endure it no longer. The treatment itself was of the most painful nature. Finally she made up her mind to attend a prayer meeting. I went with her. “My wife went into the meeting with her eye still bandaged. She could not open it. To expose it to the light meant the most agonising pain. The eyelid was badly inflamed. Yet after prayer the most extraordinary transformation took place. It was all a matter of seconds. The pain vanished in an instant. My wife took off the bandages she had worn for weeks and walked from the meeting with her eyesight as strong as it had ever been. “She has never worn the bandaga again. She can read the smallest type without glasses. The cure astounded both of us.” Medical men, Sir Herbert added, had failed completely to explain the cure. Curing the Blind. At the headquarters of the Foursquare movement recently Mr James McWhirter, one of its leaders, disclosed details of dozens of other cures which were taking place daily. “Every case is authenticated with scrupulous care,” he said. ‘They are not temporary improvements in health due to the emotion of the moment. We wait to see if the cure is lasting before we make any claims. At the Albert Hall, 35 cripples recorded cures. Nineteen people who had been blind stood up to testify that their sight had been restored to them. There were also hundreds of unclassified cures.” A typical case was that of Mr James Gregson, of Leeds. His spine was injured in a serious accident, and every bone in his body shifted out of position. Hospitals were unable to do anything for him. His legs were twisted and he could only drag them along in a crossed position. He was in acute pain night and day. Then Mr Jeffreys laid his hands upon Gregson and prayers were offered for him. Immediately the injured man ielt the bones slipping back into place. He experienced a sensation as if a dozen hands were soothing his limbs. In a few minutes he was completely healed. Now he is back at work. He claims that he is as healthy and strong as he was before his accident. Cripple Walks Again. A Southampton woman, a hopeless cripple for 14 years, was enabled to walk by another instantaneous cure. In her testimony she described how one leg, which had been kept in splints, was as frail as that of a child, and four-and-a-half inches shorter than the other. “When prayed for, my whole body vibrated with life. I was healed. I stood up and stepped out of my bath-chair without aid. I was on my feet for the first time for 14 years.” Now the fame of these cures is spreading all over the country. Recent nicetings in London, Nlanchester, Brighton, Eastbourne and other towns have been crowded out, and overflow meetings held. Everywhere people give evidence of the miraculous healings which they have experienced.
