TAPANUI NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) The Tapanui sub-branch of the West Otago Plunket Society farcwclled Nurse Dale at a social evening on Thursday. The president (Mrs J. H. White), said that Miss Dale, during the past two years had rendered splendid service, and the committee and mothers felt they would like to show their esteem for her, and thanks for her work. They asked her to accept three books. Miss Dale suitably replied. Competitions, several musical items and supper were enjoyed by all. At Heriot Miss Dale was entertained at afternoon tea in the hall and presented with a purse containing money with which to buy a memento from her Heriot friends. Mrs R. F. Sim presided and made the presentation to Miss Dale. The return basketball match between Merino Downs and Waikaka Valley girls was played on the lawn at “Rungahiwi,” the residence of Mr and Mrs W. J. McKenzie. Quite a number of spectators attended, and were keenly interested in the match, which resulted in a win for the Valley by 7 goals to 4. Miss Jessie Lindsay refereed the game. Afternoon tea was served on the lawn. Mr J. W. Cooper returned thanks to Mr and Mrs J. W. McKenzie for the use of their lawn for the match. The Young People’s Ball held in Waikoikoi Hall on Friday evening was a decided success, the hall being crowded. Visitors came from Tapanui, Gore, and all the surrounding districts. Messrs O. Dow and F. Spittle were M.C.’s and the music was supplied by the New Masters’ Band, Gore. Mr W. A. Yardley presided over the meeting at Kelso of the Tapanui subprovincial executive of the Farmers Union, delegates being present from Moa Flat, Crookston, Heriot, Tapanui, Kelso and ’Koi.

A motion was carried that the secretary write to the South Otago Freezing Company asking that an effort be made to get stock arriving at Balclutha at 2.30 p.m. conveyed to the Finegand works without the present delays, which, it was stated, were detrimental to stock, many lambs getting down in the trucks and bruised. The extra levy per member under the proposed new organization scheme was discussed and a motion carried “That capitation already paid by the branches should be sufficient to meet all expenses for organization.” There was a lengthy discussion on the increased levy on members for the support of “Point Blank,” the Farmers’ Union paper. On the motion of Mr Burnett, seconded by Mr Duff, it was resolved “That the Tapanui Sub-Provincial Council strongly protest to the O.tago Provincial Council against the increased levy.” A purchase of interest to horse breeders is that of the five-year-old stallion Monarch Print from Mr J. M. Smith, of Kakanui, by Mr A. D. Wink, Kelso. He is very well bred, being by Balmedie Monarch (champion at the Royal Show, Christchurch, as a three-year-old). West Otago v. South Tuapeka.

The attendance at the annual football match played on Saturday at Heriot in perfect weather, was disappointing, but those present watched a fast, clean game. A passing rush in which all the West Otago backs handled the ball, resulted in the ball coming out to McKenzie, who was well tackled, the scramble ending in Miller scoring. Paterson’s kick failed. West Otago 3, S. Tuapeka nil. The next score was gained by R. McKenzie who secured and ran through to score a well deserved try. West Otago 6, S. Tuapeka 0. Sewell then forced his way over to score West Otago’s third try. Gordon Spittle kicked the goal. West Otago 11, S. Tuapeka 0. On resuming after halftime S. Tuapeka attacked strongly, working play down to West Otago’s twenty-five where from a free kick Ryan kicked a fine goal. West Otago 11, S. Tuapeka 3. There was no further score. Mr J. Johnston was referee. The teams were entertained to dinner at night, the Heriot Plunket Society catering for the meal. Mr O. Duff spoke for West Otago, and Mr C. Jackson for South Tuapeka. Old Identity’s Death.

Mr J. F. Shaw who died suddenly at Tapanui Hospital last Tuesday, had lived in the Kelso district for almost 60

years. He drew a section when Conical Hill estate was cut up, and farmed it for some years before selling it to Mr McPeate. He then worked for some time in the State plantations at Dusky. Mr M. J. McFadgen officiated at the funeral to Tapanui cemetery on Thursday. He is survived by his wife, two sisters and one brother. Two brothers were killed in the war.
