GORGE ROAD NOTES
BASKETBALL MATCHES. (From Our Correspondent.) After the very cold snap in the middle of last week, little surprise was shown when on Sunday morning Gorge Road and surrounding districts were decked in a mantle of snow. Fully three inches of snow fell overnight. This was followed by quite a severe frost and much rain on Monday. On Friday afternoon although weather conditions were anything but pleasant two football teams and a basketball team from Seaward Downs journeyed to Gorge Road. The local girls basketball team won by five goals to nil. The junior Gorge Road team won 6—o and the senior team lost to Seaward Downs 9—o. After the games the Gorge Road children and friends entertained the visitors at afternoon tea. The only sporting fixture played in the Southern District was played at Gorge Road when the Kapuka ladies’ hockey team were defeated by the home team by two goals to nil. The weather was most unpleasant. Gorge Road played their best game to date as far as combination? went. The best of the team were R. Kevem, K. Buchanan and B. McCallum. < Both goals were scored in the second half, A. and K. 'Buchanan being the scorers. Poor shooting prevented K. Buchanan from scoring more goals. For Kapuka Miss Baxter nlayed a very sound game. Messrs K. Johnstone and D. Stirling refereed the game. Miss B. McCallum and Miss J. Gray, of the local hockey team, were selected to play fcr Southland 8 next Saturday at Invercargill.
