RACING IN ENGLAND

QUASHED WINS THE OAKS. FRENCH FAVOURITE DEFEATED. A SHORT HEAD SUCCESS. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, June 7. The following is the result of the second English three-year-old fillies’ classic event of the current season, as decided at Epsom:— OAKS STAKES, a sweepstake of £lOO each, with £2OOO added. For three-year-old fillies. Weight 9.0. About one

mile and a half. Lord Stanley’s br f Quashed, by Obliterate—Verdict, 9.0 1 M. Pierre Wertheimer’s b f Mesa, by Kircubbin—Mackmiller, 9.0 2 Mrs G. B. Miller’s b f Anharet, by Blandford—Sister Stella, 9.0 3 Won by a short head; length between second said third. Sixteen started.

[The result of the fillies’ “blue ribbon of the turf,” the Oaks Stakes would appear to have been a surprise result, as Quashed, who scored by a short; head, is practically an unknown performer, as she failed to gain a place last season as a youngster. On the other hand, although Mesa was unsuccessful last season she visited England last month from her native land of France to account for the One Thousand Guineas, for three-year-old fillies, weight 9.0 (one mile) from Hyndford Bride 2, and Caretta 3. There were 22 starters and Mesa won by three lengths for her French owner. Anharet, who was third -in the Oaks, won on three occasions last season as a youngster in seven starts. —Spt. Ed.]
