Arliss—and Priestley

George Arliss is to play the principal role in an original story by J. B. Priestley when he returns to the Gau-mont-British Studios within a few weeks. This announcement was made by Mr Alan J. Williamson, who has just received word from the GaumontBritish Corporation of which he is the Australasian representative. Mr Williamson also said that Mr Arliss would make another picture for this company. It may be “Pepys.” Mr Arliss will spend the greater part of this year in England. Referring to other new productions upon which work is proceeding or about to be commenced, Mr Williamson said that a big picture, to be entitled “Redemption,” would be an adaptation of Tolstoy’s novel, “The Living Corpse.”

This production would re-unite Madeleine Carroll and Conrad Veidt, whose last co-starring appearance was in “I Was a Spy.” “Redemption” is to be directed by Berthold Viertel, who made “Little Friend.”

Viertel will also direct “The Passing of the Third Floor Back,” and Nova Pilbeam (child star of “Little Friend”) will appear under her contract with Gaumont-British in an original story. Victor Saville will direct Jessie Matthews in “Barcarolle,” in which a famous Continental operatic star will probably appear. “Barcarolle” is an operatic subject, in which the composer Offenbach plays an important part. Walter Forde will direct a further Jack Hulbert picture, provisionally titled “Youth at the Helm.” Lothar Mendes, who directed “Jew Suss” will direct Conrad Veidt once more in “The Tunnel,” an imaginative and dramatic story of the future. Walter Forde is also responsible for the direction of “Soldiers Three,” based on the adventures of the Kipling soldier-characters. In May, Conrad Veidt will make a further picture—“ King of the Damned”— originally a West-end stage production which was bought by Gaumont-British within a few hours of its opening performance, as being particularly suitable for screen transcription.
