RAIDS BY POLICE
DUNEDIN HOTELS. CHARGES of betting. (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, February 15. The hearing of illegal betting charges arising from raids by the police on several hotels early in the afternoon of January 26, the day on which there was considerable racing activity throughout the Dominion, was commenced before Mr Bundle S.M. in the police court this morning. The first charges taken were _ two against Mabel Quirk, wife of the licensee of the St. Hilda hotel, of using the kitchen of the hotel as a common gaming house. Robert Peddar Crawford, barman, was charged on two counts with using the bar of this hotel as a common gaming house and Martin Quirk, licensee, with using his premises at a common gaming house and also permitting them to be used for such purpose. Evidence was given by Clara Eden, police matron, and Constable summing, with respect to several bets made with Mabel Quirk and with the barman, Crawford. After the evidence for the prosecution concluded, the hearing was adjourned sine die.
