AT WHITE HOUSE

HONOUR TO ENGLISH GIRL. An English girl stood beside the President of the United States and his wife to receive 300 young guests invited to the White House in her honour. The girl is Miss Jean Martineau, daughter of Mrs. Cyril Martineau, of London, who as Miss Muriel Robbins was a bridesmaid at the wedding of her cousins, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Anna Eleanor Roosevelt on March 17, 1905. Dinner for 50 was served in the great dark-panelled State dining room in honour of Miss Martineau and Miss Barbara Cushing, a sister-in-law of the President’s eldest son, Mr. James Roosevelt. After the dinner a dance was given in the white and gold east room, which is used for such formal occasions. Between the dances a banjo player entertained the young people.
