CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon when Mr C. B. Tapley presided over Messrs A. M. Macdonald, W. Grieve, A. le H. Hoyles, N. R. Mclsaac, H. Aitken and J. S. Brass. The date of the annual meeting was left in the hands of the president, vicepresident and the secretary as a committee. A report from the Associated Chambers regarding various matters discussed by the executive of that body was read to the meeting by the secretary. A letter was received from Mr J. W. Smith drawing attention to the fact that a letter took three days to reach Pembroke from Invercargill, provided it went by the early morning train to Dunedin—four days if it went later. He urged the chamber to use its initiative in effecting a better service. Mr Smith also suggested that now that the Kingston—Queenstown road was under construction, a flat route could be provided from Arrowtown right through the Matatapu Valley to Glendu Bay. That flat road would bring Invercargill 50 miles nearer to Pembroke and allow Invercargill business people to receive a mail every day. Mr Mclsaac (the Chief Postmaster) said that the matter of an improved mail service was already under consideration.
It was decided to refer Mr Smith’s suggestion regarding the road to the Southland League for consideration.
