A skit on 1 the American Government, the story deals with a new government department—the Department of Amusement, created to overcome the depression. Warner Baxter is the Minister iii Charge, and Madge Evans controls the children’s department. This film has that very attractive and lovable child actress, Shirley Temple, in its cast'., “When New York Sleeps,” with Spencer Tracy, Helen Twelvetrees and Alice Faye in the leading roles, comes to the Civic to-morrow. Tracy is cast as Morris Golden, a man whose sole desire is to make money, and whose gambling mania overcomes his sense of fair play. His wife (Helen Twelvetrees) does her best to bring him to a more sober manner of living; but when she learns that he has apparently been unfaithful to her, the blow struck at
her pride and her love causes a deeper sorrow which develops into complete indifference for the man to whom she had once been devoted. From this point the story leads to an interesting climax. » » » «
On Saturday “The "World Moves On” comes to the Civic Theatre. This has been heralded as a major achievement. Certainly few talking pictures have had more potent factors for success; it was written by Reginald Berkeley, adapter of “Cavalcade” and author of “Berkeley Square”; and it has distinguished players in the main parts. “The World Moves On” is the saga of a family pledged to unity through a century of civilization rent by militarism and the lust for power. In her first American film, Madeleine Carroll, the beautiful English actress of “I Was a Spy” is said to bring a fragile and almost ethereal loveliness to the part of the woman whose love and devotion finally gain their reward.
