LOAN PROPOSALS
AUCKLAND COUNCIL RATES OF PAY FOR UNEMPLOYED AN INCREASE (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, January 23. The proposals of the Auckland City Council to raise loans totalling £95,400 for completing the present No. 5 Scheme relief works as constructive works at standard rates of pay, which were submitted to a poll of ratepayers to-day, were carried by substantial majorities. Only 2663 votes were recorded out of the possible 25,499. There were two proposals. No. 1 was for the raising of £68,000 to enable the No. 5 Scheme works to be closed as such and completed as unemployment constructive works. The second proposal involved the raising of £27,400 to meet the expenses of modernizing the Victoria Arcade building. , “The official cessation of the No. 5 Scheme, so far as the Auckland City Council is concerned, marks a definite step towards placing a large number of unemployed on a much better footing, said the Mayor, Mr G. W. Hutchison. “If only all the business firms in Auckland would now review their staffs, and where possible, put on even one extra employee, the benefit which will be derived from the City Council’s action would be duplicated in industry.”
