GENERAL REVOLT
ISLAND OF KALYMNOS. ITALIAN WARSHIPS DESPATCHED. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 8.10 p.m.) London, January 23. The Athens correspondent of the Daily Mail says that Italian warships are reported to have been despatched to Kalymnos (in the Grecian archipelago) to suppress a general revolt, necessitating martial law. Following clashes between the populace and the authorities, the mayor resigned, and nobody is allowed to leave the island. Kalymnos is one of the Dodecanese islands, seized by Italy during the ItaloTurkish War (1912). Italy transferred the islands to Greece in 1920, but repudiated this cession in 1922. Turkey ceded them to Italy in 1924. The population is comprised solely of Greeks. OFFICIAL ATTITUDE NO STATEMENT ISSUED. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 8.10 p.m.) Rome, January 23. Official circles are not prepared to issue a statement whether they are aware of a rising, or of warships being despatched.
