THE SOUTHLAND TEAM CREDITABLE RECORD. (Special to the Times.) Timaru, January 22. The closest of touches again ousted a Southlander from championship honours this evening when the New Zealand intermediate and junior swimming championships were concluded in fine weather, which provided a very pleasant contrast with last evening’s downpour. Claire Lynch was the unlucky one this time, but she swam a magnificent race and had no reason to be discouraged by her reverse. This last remark applies to the team as a whole. One first and five seconds in open championship events is a very creditable record when it is considered that the pick of seven provinces was competing. At the beginning of this evening’s carnival Otago and Auckland were equal with four points each for the War Memorial Shield. Otago won with seven points, Auckland had five and Southland and Canterbury one each. It was generally expected that the final of the 75 yards intermediate girls’ breaststroke championship would be fought out between Rhoda Low (Canterbury), N. Olds and Claire Lynch, and this proved to be the case, but over the first 50 yards it appeared as if anyone might win. Misses Lynch, Olds, Smith and Low went away to a flying start, and the others quickly fell into line. There was little between them as they came up the first lap and not a yard between the first and last touch. Misses Lynch, Low and Olds were ahead at the turn and then ensued an exciting race for the tape. The Southland and Canterbury competitors put a foot between themselves and Miss Olds, and as they breasted the tape. The spectators were uncertain as to the winner. The judges’ decision went in favour of Miss Low.

The race provided a great finish to a good carnival. No records were broken at this fixture, but some very good times were put up, considering the Century Baths are on the slow side.

The Southland team returns south tomorrow.

Chambers and McGregor led all the way in the 75 yards junior boys’ breaststroke event. Chambers has lowered the record set by R. Geddes for this event on two occasions recently. He touched ahead of McGregor and increased the lead to win by two and a-half yards. Jones was a yard further back. A. Mair (Southland) dropped back after 40 yards. ■ S. W. Jarvis scored his third win for the meeting when he romped home in an easy first in the final of the 220 yards intermediate boys’ freestyle event. As a matter of fact, he has not been headed even in heats, demonstrating his superiority to other competitors very convincingly. D. Davis (Southland) had been eliminated in his heat in the morning. Jarvis, as usual, went ahead at the start and was not passed at any stage. Barry and Pascoe were close up behind him over the first lap. Barry and Jarvis turned together, the first lap being cut out in 30sec. Then Jarvis commenced to move away from the field and was a length and a-half in the lead at the 150 yards mark. Pascoe took second position at this stage and Jarvis gradually increased his stroke to win by 15 yards. Goldsmith beat Barry by a touch for third.

C. Eckhold retained the intermediate boys’ diving title comfortably. Much of the interest was taken from this event by the fact that all three competitors were from Otago. As was expected, Auckland took the 50 yards junior girls’ freestyle title. J. Macdonald (Southland) had qualified in her heat. J. Melhose dived into the lead, closely followed by her teammate, G. Priestley. The leaders set a fast pace and the Southland girl found the going too torrid, although she put up a good showing. Miss Melhose won easily by two yards, but Miss Graham put in a great spurt and gained second place by a foot.
