Mr E. R. Wilson returned from the north by last night’s express. Messrs A. A. Zimmer (Melbourne), R. G. Stark, F. Hunt, A. Hall and F. Davis (Dunedin) are at the Club Hotel.

Mr J. Mcßride, of Timaru, the wellknown South Canterbury representative Rugby player, is at present on a visit to Invercargill. Mr R. Boulter, his Majesty’s Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, arrived in Invercargill by last night’s express and is at the Grand Hotel. At last night's meeting of the Invercargill City Council the resignation of Mr J. A. Mills, wharfinger for the Harbour Department, was received with regret. The Town Clerk was instructed to write Mr Mills thanking him for his past services. Mr T. N. Mitchell, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Winton, has returned from his annual leave, spent in the north. Mr F. A. Ellis, who has acted in Mr Mitchell’s absence, . left yesterday for Riverton to act in a similar capacity. A London cable message states: —Sir James Parr, in conformity with the increase in tourist publicity, went to Brighton over the week-end to view an exhibition in which New Zealand is participating. Sir James Parr was tendered a luncheon by the Mayor. Members of the Southland Presbytery met last evening in the Nightcaps Presbyterian Church to ordain and induct the Rev. E. B. Stevenson into the local charge. The Moderator, Mr W. A. McCaw, presided, while the Revs. R. J. Cawley, A. L. Miller, A. McFarlane and Coomber assisted. The Australian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, Mr R. H. Nesbitt, has advised the secretary of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce (Mr A. L. Adamson) that he will visit the city next month, the probable date of his arrival in Invercargill being February 12. It is his intention to discuss matters appertaining to Australian trade conditions with the Chamber.

At yesterday’s meeting of the Southland Electric Power Board it was decided that the chief engineer (Mr L. B. Hutton) should represent the board at the annual conference of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers at Auckland in February. Mr Hutton will be responsible for one of the main papers at the conference, entitled “Lightning—Electric Distribution Lines.” Messrs E. Oppenheim (Chicago), V. A. Paton, A. Kidd, J. Taylor, N. Flager, L. de Landis, L. Blair, H. F. Tonkin, A. Wilson, V. Pease, V. R. Peters, P. Hargreaves (Melbourne), R. Wilson, J. Jacobs (Auckland), F. Butler, H. Blake, J. McLure, John McLure, J. Beanland (Christchurch), C. T. Irvine, O. McLeod (Dunedin) and D. Cross (Glencoe) are at the Grand Hotel.

Judges have been appointed for the Winton and District Horticultural Society’s Autumn Show on Thursday, February 7, as follows: Cut flowers, Mr B. P. Mansfield, Invercargill; floral decorations, Mrs Bain Challis, Invercargill; vegetables and fruit, Mr J. Stewart, Waikiwi; farm produce, Mr R. J. Anderson, Kauana; produce, Mrs H. McLeod, Otautau; industrial, Mr H. A. Brumby, Invercargill; photography, Mr T. Walker, Winton.

Fifteen applications for the position of Assistant City Inspector were considered by the Invercargill City Council last night. The recommendation of the special sub-committee (the Mayor and the City Inspector) that Mr A. R. Knights, of Lumsden, but formerly of Invercargill, at present surveying on the Milford Sound Road, should be appointed to the vacancy, was adopted. Mr Knights holds the Sanitary Institute’s certificate and has had experience with the Health Department in Dunedin.
