DUAL POSITION
PARLIAMENTARIAN AND MAYOR.
The question of the dual position of M.P. and mayor was mentioned at last night’s meeting of the Gore Borough Council, and caused some amusement. Councillor A. McLachlan said that he had noticed in the Southland Times that Councillor D. McDougall, M.P., proposed to contest the mayoralty and would place his views before the electors. The speaker held that Councillor McDougall should give councillors the benefit of his knowledge now without waiting for the election. Councillor McDougall: Yes, you shall get it in good time, and you probably won’t like it when you do get it. Councillor McLachlan said that it was usually argued that a parliamentarian’s duties were fairly onerous, and yet Councillor McDougall thought he could manage the two jobs. The Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman): Good luck to him. ,
Councillor McLachlan: Perhaps I might suggest to you that you should try to combine the two jobs, and have a shot at it.
Councillor McDougall: Seeing that Councillor McLachlan was one of those who went round the town saying that I couldn’t do the two jobs when I stood for the council, I might remind him that since I have been on the council I have not missed a meeting. .
The Mayor: Now you are getting on to delicate ground. The discussion ended in general laughter.
