HANKE A RELIEF WORKER.

(United Press Assn. —Telegraph Copyright.) Sydney, January 19. Henry Hanke, who was awarded the Archibald prize of £390, also collected yesterday £2 9/10, being his fortnight s wages as a relief worker. His picture, the selection of which caused a .sensation in the art world, was paintea with home-made pigments on homeprepared canvas. Hanke painted his reflection in a mirror. Two years ago, finding that there was no sale for the works of an “unknown” artist, Hanke was forced to accept relief work. He won the Archibald prize this year from a record entry of 92, including many of Australia’s recognized portrait painters.
