Templin, of Christchurch, who returned on Tuesday from a six months’ visit to America. Mr Templin said he had gone carefully into local body taxation there and he had found many places of the same size as Christchurch with taxation considerably more than 50 per cent, higher. There was also a sales tax on everything, differing in amount in many States. In one there was a super sales tax imposed to keep the schools open, for the financial position was so bad that it was doubtful whether it would be possible to keep the schools open after January.
