Since the day he stepped on board a ship for the first time, he had looked out upon the sea and devoted all his intelligence and power of love to the better understanding of it, until at last it had become as a book read so often that it no longer held a surprise for him. He had, indeed, accumulated a mass of sea-lore so vast, and a knowledge of things pertaining to the sea so detailed, that between them they permitted him to forecast the weather to a certainty, no matter the season or the latitude or longitude, and, for example, to run from England to South America without any assistance from the ordinary aids to navigation. There was little need for him to consult the "List of Lights and Visual Time Signals,” when he knew by heart the characteristics of the lights in all the principal ports.—Edouard Peisson: "Outward Bound from Liverpool.” KARAMEA AT BLUFF.
