A GORE MUD-TANK
councillor McDougall’s REQUEST. Several months ago, at the request of Councillor David McDougall, M.P., the Gore Borough Council installed a mudtank in the water-table near property owned by Mr McDougall in Oxford street, East Gore. After the work was carried out the councillor complained that the tank had been placed in the wrong position and he sought the permission of the council to install another tank at his own expense. The matter was then referred to the Works Committee, the Mayor informing Councillor McDougall that if the work was necessary it would be done at the expense of tlie council. , Since no progress had been made with the matter a letter was received at last night’s meeting of the council from Messrs Bowler, Bannerman and Howells, who are acting for Councillor McDougall. • “Mr D. McDougall, sen., considers that the installation of the mud tank at East Gore has been unreasonably delayed and that the proposed method of installation is unsatisfactory, stated the solicitors’ letter. “He now wishes to have the work done by a licensed drain-layer at his own expense and he has instructed us to apply to the Borough Council for a permit for him to
do so. We shall be glad to hear from you as to this at yoUr earliest convenience as Mr McDougall wishes to have the work proceeded with immediately.” The Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman) said he would oppose the request on principle. The council had already decided to do what was required; it was not right for a ratepayer, let alone a councillor, to do work which, in th; opinion of the council, was not necessary. The matter had not been overlooked, and would receive attention. Councillor McDougall said that as a resident he would have a perfect right to ask for a connection from his house to the sewer, and he did not think there was any difference in this case. In wet weather the spot was a quagmire. He intended to build on the section) but at present it would not be possible to convey building material to it. On the motion of Councillor A. McLachlan. it was decided to reply to the solicitors that the matter was in hand.
